As Member Companies advance in their development, they may be eligible for capital investments in the form of convertible loans or equity from SC Launch, Inc., SCRA’s Investment Affiliate. Companies must go through due diligence and, if selected, will present to the SC Launch, Inc. Board of Directors for approval. Investment terms are dependent on each company and matching raises, or other conditions may exist in order to receive investment funding.

Matching Grant funds are available to companies that have been granted Federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Tech Transfer (STTR) Phase I Awards. These grants are highly competitive.

Amount: Up to $50,000
Why: To address critical gaps to obtaining Federal Phase II funding.

This funding enables startups to complete projects crucial to positioning the company to obtain Federal Phase II SBIR/STTR funding or to fund certain costs not covered or allowed under the Phase I Federal award.

The Academic Startup Assistance Program (ASAP) is available to for-profit companies sponsored by an academic institution.

Amount: Up to $25,000
Why:  To develop technology and further research efforts

This grant is early-stage funding to assist a company in achieving one or more critical milestones toward commercialization that will serve as the foundation for pursuing follow-on funding*.

The company’s final application must be submitted by the Technology Transfer Office or equivalent organization at an academic institution.

*Follow-on Funding: Investment capital that a company has received after financial support from SCRA.

SCRA provides Project Development Fund (PDF) grants to qualified companies in the SC Launch program that are not affiliated with an academic institution.

Why: To assist a startup in achieving critical milestones to commercialization that will allow them to pursue investment capital (follow-on funding*).

The company must be eligible to become an SC Launch Client Company. The limit is $25,000 per company during its lifetime.

A successful demonstration project will provide a valuable solution to the corporate partner and a significant growth opportunity for a small business and/or academic partner by developing a new product, distribution channel, customer or research.

Who: Early-stage Companies or Academic Institutions in South Carolina

Amount: Up to $50,000
Why: A demonstration grant supports a matching monetary or in-kind investment by a corporate entity into a project at a small business or academic institution. The grants are designed to lower technical or business risk by accomplishing a technology/testing milestone or opening a new distribution channel, sales pipeline, market, etc.
