SCRA researchers apply composite materials in the manufacturing of prosthetics to increase durability and decrease weight. SCRA also leads efforts to apply advanced, any-shape, any-size sensors that were developed by an SCRA-supported start-up company to enable prosthetic devices to self-adjust for greater comfort.
SCRA won a Defense Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Achievement Award at the 2011 Defense Manufacturing Conference in Anaheim, California for improving the durability and comfort of prosthetics and orthotics for our wounded men and women in uniform. SCRA advanced materials applications make prosthetics 50 percent lighter, more comfortable, longer lasting and 40 percent less expensive.
