Company Overview Information

About SCRA:
We are an applied research and commercialization services company with operations in Anderson, Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina. SCRA also operates offices at Clemson University ICAR and in Washington, DC. The company, started by the SC Legislature under a public charter in 1983, was created to help develop technology-based industries in the state. With a one-time founding grant of $500,000 and 1,400 undeveloped acres, SCRA has grown into a self-sustaining company with multiple missions and receives no tax appropriations from the state. Revenues are generated primarily through competitively won applied research contracts awarded by the federal government and about 200 corporations. According to multiple economic studies, through Fiscal Year 2010, SCRA’s cumulative economic output represents a contribution of over $13 billion to South Carolina’s economy plus approximately 15,000 technology-related jobs per capita with wages between $55,000 and $77,000.

SCRA has three sectors which fulfill our missions:

  • SCRA Technology Ventures helps innovative, early-stage companies grow, commercialize innovations and create jobs. The sector, through its award-winning SC Launch program, is significantly contributing to South Carolina’s economic development and Knowledge Economy.
  • SCRA Applied R&D manages over 100 national and international programs worth over $1.5 billion in contract value and creates and leads teams from many industries, organizations and disciplines to develop and apply technology solutions to complex challenges.
  • SCRA R&D Facilities builds and manages state of the art laboratories, high-tech manufacturing facilities and secure spaces for sensitive work. These facilities are critical infrastructure for the Knowledge Economy, where innovators develop and commercialize new technologies.

About SC Launch:
