SCRA Congratulates SC Academy of Science Award Winners
Four Awards Recognize Excellence in Science

Charleston, SC - October 21, 2011 - SCRA today congratulated the recipients of the SC Academy of Science's Governor's Awards for Excellence in Science. In a recent ceremony at the State House, Governor Nikki Haley presented four awards to researchers from the Citadel, the University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina - Sumter and Clemson University. Each award recognized excellence in a different area of science.

The four awards, sponsored by SCRA, MeadWestvaco, Roche Carolina Inc. and Michelin North America, honor individuals or teams within South Carolina that have made extraordinary achievements and contributions to science. SCRA sponsors the Predominantly Undergraduate Institution Award for Excellence in Science, won by Dr. Saul J. Adelman, Professor of Physics at The Citadel.

Other awardees were Dr. James Sodetz, University of South Carolina, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, sponsored by Roche Carolina, Dr. Laine Mears, Clemson University, International Center for Automotive Research, sponsored by Michelin North America and Dr. James Privett, USC Sumter, Division of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering, sponsored by MeadWestvaco.

"We congratulate the award winners on their outstanding achievements in the scientific arena," said SCRA CEO Bill Mahoney. "SCRA is pleased to participate in these awards, and we are delighted to promote awareness of the quality of research in the state. Expanding scientific research will ultimately help South Carolina's Knowledge Economy become stronger and allow us to be an example for other states in the nation."

The South Carolina Academy of Science, founded in 1924, is a state-wide, interdisciplinary science organization. Membership is open for anyone with an interest in science. The Governor's Awards for Excellence in Science were established in 1985.
